Home (2015) Facts and Movie References

Here are some stellar facts about the movie Home. If you’re not familiar with the Dreamworks animation, I wrote a separate article detailing the movie. These facts may contain spoilers.

1. This movie is based on the book “The True Meaning of Smekday.”

2. Gratuity ‘Tip’ Tucci, voiced by Rihanna, is the first human black protagonist in a feature film by DreamWorks Animation. However Will Smith‘s character in Shark Tale (2004), though a fish, potentially making him the company’s first black protagonist, regardless of species.

3. If you look carefully in the convenient store scene, you can see a box of cheesy dibbles from penguins of Madagascar.

4. Tip, Rihanna‘s character, is from Barbados, just like the singer in real life.

5.The film features a Calico colored cat, the same coloration of the cat featured in the Disney movie Big Hero 6 (2014) which hit theaters 5 months prior.

6. When the humans are being placed in the new human land, the family from insideout is shown

7. There is a windmill that appears among the floating landmarks. It looks similar to the one featured in Gorillaz “Feel Good, Inc”, but is unclear if that is an actual homage or just a fun coincidence.

8. There are also many references in the film related to other classic films:
+ Back to the future (1985) – The license plate of Tip’s car falls off and spins around briefly on one of its corners, just like the plate from the time-traveling DeLorean
+ Back to the future II (1985) – Tip’s car has been hover-converted and its source of fuel requires an outside source rather than just gasoline.
+ Close Encounters of a Third Kind (1977) – Boov spaceship landing on the earth
+ Jurassic Park (1993) – Tip and Oh are escaping from the aliens and the side mirror of the car states, objects in mirror are closer than they appear
+ Life of Pi (2012) – Tip and Oh stranded in the ocean
+ Karate Kid (1984) – Ending Credits of Tip and Oh reenacting the kick scene
Star Trek (2009) – Gorg Mothership
+ Titanic (1997) – Tip and Oh holding on to the falling Eiffel Tower ( “don’t let go” )
Wizard of Oz (1939) – Setup of entering the gate with a tornado/storm in background
