Remembering a Graphic Designer and Academy Award Winner

Saul Bass also known as one of the greatest American graphic designers passed away April 25, 1996.  He is highly known for his motion picture title sequences, posters and logos. When i was a kid i was highly influenced by his movie title works from North by Northwest, Vertigo,  West Side Story, and  It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world. He was the creative title genius for producers like Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock and movie poster for, The Shining. He also created corporate logos for AT&T, United Airlines, Quaker Oats, the US postage stamp and many more. Later throughout his career he would produce logos for a number of Japanese companies. Even though the average lifespan of his logos are for more than 34 years he imbedded in many peoples minds his unusual and creative accomplishments.
Even though Saul Bass passed away 18 years ago his work through the animated industry and film industry is still recognized today, and has played a influence on current movie title sequences such as Mad Men who play a homage to Saul Bass. His movie titles created more than just stories but an emotional and curios appeal to what would happen next in a film. His animated title sequences created depth from computerized effects to illusions.   Bass described his goal for his title sequences as “trying to reach for a simple, visual phrase that tells you what a picture is all about and evokes the essence of the story.” His work means a lot to me and will not be forgotten to other film enthusiast or artists who appreciate good story telling.
