The Boxtrolls Review

A few posts ago i mentioned the new Laika movie, Boxtrolls. I was really looking forward to this movie from the start and from the hype on the internet from showing detailed versions of the setup on social media, exclusive interviews with cast members to voices and artists, I was worried they set the bar to high. Being able to see the first screening of the movie was a little nerve racking because I didn’t know what to expect. I read bits and pieces of the story line from online but didn’t want the entire plot to get ruined. After watching this movie i was thoroughly impressed with Laika and the detail, design, and layout of the entire set was phenomenal! The story line was a little cliche but the design and quality of the characters inside and out was superb. For some reason one of the main villains, Mr. Snatcher reminded me of the child snatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and had similar traits which made the character even more unlikable. The box trolls were hilarious in their own genuine way and the main characters Eggs and Winny were charming, witty and quirky.

If you’ve seen past works of Laika such as Coraline and ParaNorman this movie certainly tops the cake; or in this case cheese. Speaking of cheese after seeing this movie with cheese playing a critical role I wouldn’t be surprised if companies decided to brand their own cheese or the company itself for promotion. The cheese jokes and other jokes in the movie were a little mature and even though I do recommend this movie for all ages there are more than a few jokes that are tongue in cheek. Much like ParaNorman and Caroline I can see a few kids not understanding some jokes and there are a few scenes that might be a little overwhelming for young children who get frightened easily. Overall this movie will certainly be a strong contender as a nominee for an Academy Award for best animation and will pocket a handful of Annie Awards.

I give this movie 5 boxes out of 5.
